Michelle Alpert, M.D., director of rehabilitative medicine, joined the Department of Medicine in 2007. Dr. Alpert obtained her bachelor's degree in psychology and biomedical sciences from the University of Michigan and her medical degree from the University of Michigan School of Medicine. She completed a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and previously served as associate medical director at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital. Dr. Alpert is a clinical instructor in medicine in the Harvard Medical School.
Hassan Arif, M.D., is a geriatrician on the Medical Acute Care Unit at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center. He earned his medical degree from Khyber Medical College in Pakistan and completed his residency in internal medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital and a fellowship in geriatrics at Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Arif is a clinical fellow in medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Randi Berkowitz, M.D., obtained her bachelor's degree from Barnard College and her medical degree from the Pritzker School of Medicine. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Hospital and a fellowship in the Harvard Medical School Multi-campus Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine. She is board certified in internal medicine and serves as medical director of the skilled nursing facility at Orchard Cove and the Recuperative Services Unit at HRC. Dr. Berkowitz is an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Sarah Berry, M.D., M.P.H., obtained her bachelor's degree from Auburn University, her medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine, and her master's degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center and a fellowship in the Harvard Medical School Multi-campus Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine. Dr. Berry, an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School, is primarily interested in osteoporosis and outcomes following osteoporotic fractures in the community and nursing home settings. She is a research fellow in the Hebrew SeniorLife Institute for Aging Research and a geriatrician providing long-term care services at HRC.
Jennifer Brinckerhoff, M.D., is a staff geriatrician at the Orchard Cove Wellness Center. She earned her medical degree at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in geriatrics, both at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dr. Brinckerhoff is board certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine.
Joseph Calabrese, D.M.D., F.A.C.D., attended Manhattanville College and received his dental medicine degree from the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Following dental school, he completed a one-year residency program in general dentistry and a two-year Faculty Training Fellowship in Geriatric Dental Medicine at Boston Medical Center/Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Calabrese has been the director of dental medicine at Hebrew SeniorLife for the past 10 years and holds academic appointments at Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine and Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Calabrese is a fellow in the American College of Dentistry. His interests include oral health in older adults and geriatric dental education.
Katalin Danji, M.D., is a staff geriatrician at HRC's Medical Acute Care Unit. A graduate of the University of Szeged Faculty of Medicine in Hungary, Dr. Danji completed her residency training at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh and her geriatrics fellowship at New York University Langone Medical Center. Her clinical interests include memory disorders, delirium and preventive geriatrics. She is an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Karen Dick, Ph.D., A.P.R.N., B.C., A.A.N.P., is a gerontological nurse practitioner at Orchard Cove's Wellness Center. She received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Southeastern Massachusetts University, her master's in gerontological nursing from Boston University, and her Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Rhode Island.
Jan Doherty, N.P., is a nurse practitioner at HRC's Recuperative Services Unit. She received her bachelor's degree in nursing from the Fitchburg State College and a master's in nursing from the University of Massachusetts Boston. She is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
Peg Gildersleeve, R.N., M.S.N., C.S., is a nurse practitioner at Orchard Cove. She earned a postgraduate degree in adult primary care from Simmons College. Her professional interests include depression in the elderly and geriatric urogynecology.
Jane Givens, M.D., M.S.C.E., is a staff physician at HRC and a research scientist at the Institute for Aging Research. A graduate of the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, she completed a physician-scientist fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and a geriatrics fellowship at Boston Medical Center. A primary care physician on one of HRC's long-term care units, Dr. Givens' research interests include dementia, palliative care, and mental health. She is an instructor in medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Yosef Glassman, M.D., is medical director of outpatient services at NewBridge on the Charles and a staff geriatrician at the Gloria Adelson Field Health Center's short-term, post-acute care unit. A graduate of Boston University, he earned his medical degree at Tufts University. Dr. Glassman, a former combat physician with the Israeli Defense Forces, completed his internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, a residency at Tufts, and a geriatric medicine fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Tara Gonsalves, N.P., is a board certified nurse practitioner at Orchard Cove's Wellness Center. She obtained her bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from Regis College.
Victoria Gorodetsky, N.P., is a nurse practitioner at HRC. She received a master's degree in nursing from Regis College and has extensive experience in home care and nursing home care. Her interests include palliative care and disease prevention.
Ihab Hajjar, M.D., is a staff geriatrician at HRC and associate director of cardiovascular research at the Institute for Aging Research. Board certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine, Dr. Hajjar's clinical interests focus on hypertension and dementia. He is a graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin and completed his internship and residency at Cleveland Clinic and fellowships at both institutions. An assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Hajjar's research interests include hypertension and the aging brain.
Sharon Inouye, M.D., M.P.H., is a geriatrician at HRC, senior scientist at the Institute for Aging Research, and director of its Aging Brain Center. She also holds the Milton and Shirley F. Levy Family Chair in Alzheimer's Disease at the Institute. Dr. Inouye received her medical degree from the University of California San Francisco and her master's in public health from Yale University. She completed a residency at UCSF, an internal medicine fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine, and a fellowship in geriatrics and clinical epidemiology at Yale. Her research focuses on the prevention and management of delirium in older people across settings, long-term outcomes of delirium, and the inter-relationship between delirium and dementia. Dr. Inouye is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Ruth Kandel, M.D., obtained her bachelor's degree from State University of New York at Buffalo and her medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She completed a residency in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital and a geriatrics fellowship at Bedford Veteran's Administration Hospital/Boston University Medical Center. She provides inpatient primary care at HRC and is an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. Her academic interests include Alzheimer's disease, memory disorders, and infection control in long-term care facilities.
Susan Kalish, M.D., M.P.H., obtained her bachelor's degree from Princeton University, her medical degree from Cornell University School of Medicine, and a master 's in public health from Harvard School of Public Health. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Brown University and fellowships at Beth Israel Hospital and in the Harvard Medical School Multi-campus Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine. She provides inpatient primary care at the Gloria Adelson Field Health Center at NewBridge on the Charles, chairs the Medical Care Review Committee, and serves on the HSL Institutional Review Board. Douglas Kiel, M.D., M.P.H., is a geriatrician at HRC, director of medical research at the Institute for Aging Research, and co-director of its Musculoskeletal Research Program. He earned his medical degree at the University of North Carolina and his master's in public health at Boston University. He completed his residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and a fellowship at Boston University Medical Center. Dr. Kiel's research interests include osteoporosis and related fractures, including falls, nutritional factors, genetics and frailty, as well as pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions to preserve bone mass and prevent fractures. He is an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Natalia Kocherovsky, R.N., B.S.N., is a nurse practitioner on the Medical Acute Care Unit and Recuperative Services Unit at HRC. She has served in nursing roles at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Suburban Home Health Care and was an emergency medical technician with General Ambulance. She will receive her master's degree in nursing from the University of Massachusetts Boston in May 2009.
Mark D. Kuperwaser, M.D., is director of ophthalmology at Hebrew Rehabilitation Center. Board certified in ophthalmology, Dr. Kuperwaser's clinical interests focus on glaucoma and cataracts, two common eye diseases in seniors. A graduate of the Boston University School of Medicine, he completed his internship at the Boston V.A. Medical Center and his residency and fellowship in glaucoma at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary. Dr. Kuperwaser is an instructor in opthalmology at Harvard Medical School.
Lewis Lipsitz, M.D., obtained his bachelor's degree from Franklin and Marshall College and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the Beth Israel Hospital and a geriatrics fellowships at Beth Israel Hospital and in the Harvard Medical School Multi-campus Fellowship in Geriatric Medicine. He is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, vice president of academic medicine at Hebrew SeniorLife, and director of the Hebrew SeniorLife Institute for Aging Research, where he holds the Irving and Edyth S. Usen and Family Chair in Medical Research. His research interests are in the areas of falls and syncope. Dr. Lipsitz also serves as the chief of gerontology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Laura McNamara, A.P.R.N.-B.C., is a nurse practitioner at the Gloria Adelson Field Health Center at NewBridge on the Charles. She came to HRC from Evercare-United Health Group, where she was a geriatric nurse practitioner. She also served as a nurse practitioner at Beacon Hospice. A graduate of Harvard University, she received her M.B.A. from Northeastern University and her master's in nursing science from Boston College.
Eran D. Metzger, M.D., is associate director of psychiatry at HRC. Board certified in psychiatry, neurology and forensic psychiatry, Dr. Metzger's clinical interests focus on the interfaces between medical illness and emotional disorders, as well as medical ethics. He is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine and completed his internship at Brockton Hospital and his residency and fellowship at Beth Israel Hospital. An assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Metzger's research interests include collaborative care models for treating psychiatric illness in the elderly.
Susan L. Mitchell, M.D., M.P.H., is a staff geriatrician at HRC and a senior scientist at the Institute for Aging Research. Board certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine, Dr. Mitchell's clinical interests focus on geriatrics. She is a graduate of the University of Ottawa, where she received her medical degree, and the Harvard School of Public Health. She completed her internship and residency at The Ottawa Civic Hospital in Canada and a fellowship at Harvard Medical School. An associate professor of medicine at HMS, Dr. Mitchell's research interests include tube feeding in severe cognitive impairment, palliative care for patients with advanced dementia, and quality of care in nursing homes.
